In 1956，the Mathematics Teaching and Research Section was established in Taiyuan Institute of Technology.

In 1959, the Department of Basic Theory was established in Taiyuan Institute of Technology.

In 1962, the Division of Basic Theory was established respectively in Taiyuan Institute of Technology and in Shanxi Mining College.

In 1974, the Division of Basic Theory was abolished.

In 1977, the Division of Basic Theory was restored.

In 1984, the Department of Mathematics and Mechanics in Taiyuan Polytechnic University was renamed from the Department of Basic Theory of Taiyuan Institute of Technology.

In 1990, the Department of Mathematics and Mechanics was renamed to Department of Mathematical physics and Mechanics in Taiyuan Polytechnic University.

In 1997, the Department of Mathematics of Taiyuan University of Technology was established by the combination of the Department of Mathematical Physics and Mechanics in Taiyuan Polytechnic University and the Division of Basic Theory in Shanxi Mining College.

In 1998, the College of Liberal Arts and Science was established in Taiyuan University of Technology, and the Department of Mathematics is affiliated to the College of Liberal Arts and Science.

In 2000, the College of Science was established independently, and the Department of Mathematics was affiliated to the College of Science.

In 2011, the College of Mathematics was established independently.
